Maintaining CQC compliance within care home medication storage

Care Home in Maidenhead

A Care Home operator with over 20 sites across the Home Counties employs MGI to maintain its air conditioning, including replacements and new systems as necessary. MGI also provide specialist deep cleaning services for kitchen extract systems and kitchens.

Customer Brief

The care home in Maidenhead had been built around 2005, and had a central air conditioning system, using two external VRF air conditioning condensers, connected to ceiling mounted corridor cooling units, with wall mounted units in the Drugs Rooms on Ground, First & Second floors. MGI had attended several times over a two year period, in an effort to keep the obsolete system running, with parts supply issues becoming apparent. This caused severe issues in the Drugs Storage Rooms, which need to be kept at 25C, to comply with CQC guidelines, and when the system stopped working, all areas were affected.

MGI Solution

MGI advised the care home operator that some thought should be given to a separate system for the Drugs Rooms, not dependent on the aging VRV system, which although running, was now obsolete, with parts becoming difficult to obtain – a separate quote was provided for its total replacement for a future CAPEX budget.

MGI quoted for three Daikin split systems, providing a wall mounted unit in each Drugs Room, utilizing R32 refrigerant, with a low GWP, to work alongside the existing system, with the external condensers mounted together. An order was placed to carry out the recommended installation.

Benefits to the customer

The benefit of this is that the Drugs Rooms can now be individually temperature controlled, and each room is entirely independent of each other, and the central VRV Air Conditioning System.

Timescales

Three air conditioning systems were installed over a five day period, with complicated pipework runs, as the Drugs Rooms were in the central core of the building, so pipework was all routed via the first floor in all cases.

Outcome

A satisfied customer, with each of the Drugs Rooms locally & independently temperature controlled, meaning that if one system fails, there are still two other rooms to use.

The Daikin equipment chosen offers a long warranty. The quick turn-around to complete the project also meant minimal disruption to the Care Home.
